Personal Training Marketing That Builds Your Business

If your personal training website is not your most profitable marketing tool, it’s time to use a system proven to generate new clients.

Fitness training is hot.  Healthy lifestyles are hot.  Living to be a 100 is becoming a mantra.

This is a great time for personal trainers.  People want to be fit and healthy, and they’re looking for professional guidance.

Where are they searching?  Where everyone searches nowadays:  on the Internet.

Inbound Marketing for Personal Trainers

Just like fitness training is hot, so is inbound marketing, which is a type of marketing based on getting clients to find your services when they have an active need.  Outbound marketing, on the other hand, pushes out advertising to a large population segment in the hopes of catching a few interested leads.

Inbound marketing is more efficient and takes advantage of technology that allow people to find products, services, and information on their time.  The center of this type of marketing Google search, PCs and mobile devices.

What you need to effectively start a digital, inbound marketing campaign for your personal trainer business:

1.  Visibility on search.  When someone in your area searches on fitness or personal trainer keywords, your ads need to show up.  Page 1 on Google is the prime real estate.  To garner the top positions, you need a paid search (PPC) campaign.   In the long run you can optimize for organic SEO, which is a process to gain rank, but provides free clicks.

2.  Effective ads.  The ads that show up on the search page are your first chance to entice interest in fitness trainer leads.  A few words or a slightly different offer can make a lot of difference in click through rates.  Marketing professionals test ads to get the best results.

3.  A user-focused website.  Your website’s primary role is to convince people you are the fitness trainer for them, then persuade them to contact you.  A high-converting personal trainer website design focuses on the experience of the visitor.

Personal Trainer Marketing 360® is built to create an inbound flow of leads for your personal trainer business.  We put the 3 pillars in place for you then use data to make improvements over time.

The result?  You spend your time training clients instead of looking for them.

Well, that’s pretty enticing ad copy.  It would surly get most people’s attention, and would probably get you very high click-through-rates on your ads.

It would also be a colossal waste of budget.

This is an extreme example, but when it comes paid search marketing for your personal trainer business, you want to avoid enticing uninterested searchers to your website.  You’ll pay to get them there, but they won’t convert into business.

Match Your PPC Ads with Keywords and Landing Page Content

Here is the equation:

Keyword need + specific, enticing ad + benefit focused landing page copy = conversion.

The keyword targets a specific need.  For example, you might target someone who is rehabilitating a knee after surgery.

The ad gets the searcher’s attention by addressing the exact need that triggered the search.  Recovering from knee surgery?  This would make a strong headline.

Landing page copy talks about what you do, and more importantly, how you can help, i.e., the benefits of your strength training.  We’ll help you cut 1/3 off your rehab time!  Call today!

This is a formula that converts and will get you the most leads from your personal trainer paid search advertisements.

Social psychologist Emily Balcetis explains that the way we “view” exercise impacts how difficult we think it is.  Her insights offer new ways for you to motivate your personal trainer clients.

finish line

How far away is the finish line?

In a fascinating Ted Talk (also below), Emily Balcetis explains research that shows individual perception influences how difficult we think exercise is.  Depending on the actual visual view – in your minds eye – you’ll see fitness goals as more difficult or doable.

Her tests took data on how far away people perceived a finish line to be where the goal was to cross it while carrying extra weight.

Predictably, people who are more fit (fit established by comparing waist/hip lines) saw the distance as shorter than those who were not.  But interestingly, people who were not fit – but had established fitness goals in their lives – saw the distance as shorter than people who were more fit but had no fitness goals.

Further, when they got people to focus their vision exclusively on the finish line, blurring out other distractions, the distance seemed shorter than for people who viewed the finish line with everything else in the field of vision.

This was called keeping “eyes on the prize”.  She concluded that altering the way we visualize exercise can have an impact on how difficult we think it is, which in turn effects our motivation.

Many people view personal trainers like a Drill Sargent, barking orders in a red-faced conniption to motivate vigorous effort.  But you might do well in your practice and personal trainer marketing campaigns to think of how you can get people to visualize an exercise task as being easier.

A goal we are focused on “looks” closer than one we are ambivalent about achieving.   When the end is in sight, our motivation increases to cross the line.  And motivation is what you’re all about.
