How far away is the finish line?

In a fascinating Ted Talk (also below), Emily Balcetis explains research that shows individual perception influences how difficult we think exercise is.  Depending on the actual visual view – in your minds eye – you’ll see fitness goals as more difficult or doable.

Her tests took data on how far away people perceived a finish line to be where the goal was to cross it while carrying extra weight.

Predictably, people who are more fit (fit established by comparing waist/hip lines) saw the distance as shorter than those who were not.  But interestingly, people who were not fit – but had established fitness goals in their lives – saw the distance as shorter than people who were more fit but had no fitness goals.

Further, when they got people to focus their vision exclusively on the finish line, blurring out other distractions, the distance seemed shorter than for people who viewed the finish line with everything else in the field of vision.

This was called keeping “eyes on the prize”.  She concluded that altering the way we visualize exercise can have an impact on how difficult we think it is, which in turn effects our motivation.

Many people view personal trainers like a Drill Sargent, barking orders in a red-faced conniption to motivate vigorous effort.  But you might do well in your practice and personal trainer marketing campaigns to think of how you can get people to visualize an exercise task as being easier.

A goal we are focused on “looks” closer than one we are ambivalent about achieving.   When the end is in sight, our motivation increases to cross the line.  And motivation is what you’re all about.
